1/35 Model to build LIGHT TANK R35 - tamiya - TAM32373
Specifications were issued by the French Army in 1933 for a light tank with two crew members, armed with two machine guns or a small caliber cannon. The concept was that of a contemporary FT17. The model submitted by Renault was chosen. It had inherited the AMC35's scissor suspension employing angled trailing arms and horizontal rubber blocks for the road wheels. The hull with rounded shapes and the turret were molded and the firepower was provided by two machine guns. The armor was up to 30mm thick. On the model of series designated R35, the armament was reinforced by a cannon SA18 of 37mm with short tube with coaxial machine-gun. Like the armament, the maximum speed of 20 km/h reached with the 82 hp engine was sufficient for infantry support, suggesting that combat conditions similar to those of WW1 were envisaged. turret was in charge of fire, observation, communications and driver instructions. The first R35s were delivered in June 1936, and 1,070 were in service at the start of WWII in September 1939. The defeat of France in June 1940 limited production to around 1,600 units. The R35 was an advanced design, including the use of cast metal, and it deserves its place in French armored history.
