That's the reason why the Freeline axles are highly sought after by racers and drivers other than the Birel/Art brand.  Here is a very good used 1040Fx 50 mm axle
Please note this is for the shifter category  The key way is on the inside of the dual rail frame.  It is also re-enforced inside with a solid plastic to secure the keyway and keep the gear from tearing up the axle.
This would not work for a two cycle application on the external ( near the wheel hub) location.
