Description
From Wikipedia:Hilo March is a well known Hawaiian song and a popular song covered by
musicians, Polynesian and non-Polynesian alike. It was written by Joseph
Kapeau Ae`a and originally was called "Ke Ala Tuberose". It also used as the
soundtrack in SpongeBob SquarePants (Composed by The Hawaiian Serenaders as
"Hilo March", and Composed by Kapono Beamer as "Old Hilo March").
It has been adopted as the school song by the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Along with another popular song, "Aloha ?Oe", every person from child to
senior citizen know is said to the words and music to these songs. Originally
the song was called "Ke Ala Tuberose" and was composed by Joseph Kapeau Ae`a,
who was a member of the Royal Hawaiian Band and also a friend of Princess
Liliuokalani. The princess requested Ae`a and the band come to Hilo and that
is where he composed the song. In August 1881, the title was changed from "Ke
Ala Tuberose" to "Hilo March" and played by the Royal Hawaiian band under
Captain Henri Berger's direction. Besides being a favorite of the Royal
Hawaiian band and its popularity in the Islands, it has been picked up as a
favorite by many steel guitarists on the mainland. The lyrics of the song
tell of Hilo's beauty as well as the beauty of the Lehua flower.
Lyrics:
Heed the fragrance of the tuberose
Fragrance wafted at at evening time
Like verbena leaves
Singing in the heart, tightly clasped
Chorus:
Behold again the beauty of Hilo
And the beautiful grove of lehua
Cherished lei
Worn by visitors
Nothing deters the invitation of love
Greeting the Pu?ulena wind
Famous wind of the land
Home of scarlet honey-creepers
Not indifferent to the call of love
Hilo is so beautiful
With the rustling of lehua in the rain
As though saying
Wait until the princess comes
