Just A Bird’s-Eye View Of My Old Kentucky Home was released in 1926. It was written by Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson. Kahn and Donaldson both wrote a large number of songs that became standards and form part of the Great American Songbook. Kahn wrote material for vaudeville and contributed to many Broadway musicals before becoming a full-time motion picture songwriter. Donaldson began by writing original music for his school productions. He entertained troops at Camp Upton, New York during WWI. He was hired by Irving Berlin Music Company where he produced many hit songs before establishing his own publishing company in 1928. Kahn and Donaldson composed over one hundred songs together.
I Found A Million Dollar Baby (In A Five And Ten Cent Store) is one of two songs. One was written by Billy Rose and had music by Fred Fisher in 1926. The other was written by Harry Warren with lyrics by Mort Dixon and Billy Rose in 1931. These two songs, having the same title, have similar lyrics and different music. The lyrics in the 1931 version were mostly written by Dixon and were not identical. The earlier version of the song was not a hit. The 1931 version was introduced in the Broadway musical Billy Rose’s Crazy Quilt, and has since become a pop standard with many covers done over the years.
