Vintage 1920's-30's- 17" ALUMINUM MODEL RACE CAR ARCADE GAME. HISTORY: Boardwalk Racers, photo's of various size cars from our collection. These large race cars were not for sale to the general public, but made especially for "Games of Chance" for amusement parks, arcades, boardwalks and at county and state fairs during the 1920's & 30's. One of the major manufacturer was the H.C. Evans Co. of Chicago,IL (1892-1955) makers of amusement park, fairgrounds equipment and gambling devices. The cars were cast of solid steel or aluminum with the larger cars measuring over 17" and weighing 30 lbs or more. Evan's most popular cars resembled full size racers of the time, like Malcomb Campbell's "Bluebird" land speed car and the futuristic "Thunderbolt". The cars either came painted in traditional bright circus colors and numbers, some came nickel plated, some chromed and also polish aluminum. The larger cars were used on stationary or permanent wood tracks and the smaller cars on a track that could be disassembled for traveling shows. (carnivals, fairs, circuses) All of the cars used heavy duty commercial ball bearings for wheels (many dated in the 1920's) with heavy front and rear bumpers and side brackets to protect them from hitting each other . The smaller aluminum cars were filled with lead for additional weight. The cars would be put on a long straight wooded track, on the track were painted numbers. At each end of the track were heavy rubber bands made from automotive inner tubes. The car would be pushed off and bounce back and forth, eventually stopping on a number. If you bet on that number, you would win a prize. We're sure there were gaps on the tracks with no numbers and there would be no winners, you then would be urged to bet again and again. The education was free, but the # 3 race car you have to bid on to own !
